About this site

Financial guidance, written in plain English, for people who trained in medicine or dentistry — not finance.

The Savvy Dr exists because most financial content either assumes you already know the jargon, or is trying to sell you something. This site does neither.

Who this is for

Whether you're a GP partner, a salaried GP, a hospital doctor at any stage of training or consultant level, or a dentist working as an associate, principal, or NHS/private mix — the financial questions are often the same, even if the details differ.

GPs

Partners, salaried GPs and locums navigating the NHS Pension, practice finances, and tax as a self-employed professional.

Hospital doctors

From foundation years through to consultant — pension growth, on-call and locum income, and the annual allowance trap that catches many mid-to-late career doctors.

Dentists

NHS and private mix, associates and practice owners — indemnity, self-employment tax, and the practical realities of running or working within a dental practice.

What you'll find here

Guides covering the NHS Pension and the McCloud remedy, tax and Making Tax Digital, investing and property, running a limited company, and indemnity and insurance — each written to explain the "why," not just the "what," with worked examples rather than abstract theory.

What we don't do

No product placement, no affiliate pushes toward a specific platform or provider, and no pretending that one size fits everyone. Where a decision genuinely depends on your personal circumstances, we say so.

Important disclaimer

Please read this before acting on anything

The Savvy Dr is provided for general information and educational purposes only. Nothing on this site constitutes regulated financial, tax, legal, or professional advice, and nothing here should be treated as a personal recommendation to buy, sell, or hold any investment, product, or structure.

Tax rules, pension rules, and financial regulations change frequently, and how they apply to you depends on your individual circumstances — your income, your employment status, your family situation, and much else besides. Figures on this site are checked against publicly available guidance at the time of writing, but they can go out of date, and errors are possible despite our best efforts.

Before making any financial decision — including but not limited to investing, pension planning, tax structuring, incorporating a business, or purchasing insurance or property — you should seek advice from a suitably qualified, regulated professional: an FCA-regulated financial adviser for investment and protection matters, a qualified accountant for tax matters, and a solicitor for legal matters. A professional adviser can properly assess your full circumstances in a way that a general guide never can.

In short

Use this site to understand your options and ask better questions — not as a substitute for professional advice tailored to you.
